Roof Metrics was born on the job site. After 25 years in the roofing industry, we were fed up with encountering the same problems on every job:
- Crews wasting time on complicated calculations
- Sheets being cut wrong and binned
- Hours spent figuring out code compliance
- Constant calls to engineers for basic specifications
We knew there had to be a better way. So we started creating some simple spreadsheets to handle roof cutting, ventilation, and drainage calculations. They’ve been site-tested and refined to become an invaluable part of our process, and we’re stoked to now be sharing them!
Meet Cobey
I’m Cobey Fletcher, a third-generation licensed roof plumber and the owner of Elevate Roof Plumbing in Victoria. I’ve spent over 25 years working on everything from residential homes to large-scale commercial projects. Like most tradies, I know the daily pressures of the job - tight deadlines, strict building codes, and the seemingly impossible juggle of ensuring things get done right while keeping the job moving quickly.
Why I created the calculators
I saw the same problems over and over. Shoddy guesswork, incorrect cuts, and constant calls that took over my day and cost time and money.
It was doing my head in and I thought there had to be a better way.
So, I began tinkering with some simple spreadsheets to make the calculations quick, accurate, and easy to use on-site. Once I got them right, they made a MASSIVE difference to our team. Contractors and other tradies started asking about them, and I realised that what started as a way to help my own crew could be a really useful set of calculators to help tradies everywhere.
Making the maths simple
I created Roof Metrics because I saw that there was a gap in technological advances to help trades. I wanted to take the guesswork out of the job, and honestly, I wanted to free up time in my own days.
I know that many people (especially tradies!) are pretty stuck in their ways and don’t trust the internet because they think it’s too hard to learn, so I was really intentional about making calculators that are really quick and easy to use.
It’s not about fancy software, it’s about helping tradies work more easily and efficiently. Also, teaching a new generation the accuracy of math and using your phone as a tool (not just for TikTok!).
A quote I really like is “Maths is always right. The builder got it wrong.”. I think that pretty much sums up Roof Metrics!
The cutting calculator
My roof plumbing team was forever wasting time on planning, re-cutting, and wasting sheets as they didn’t have a good system in place for cutting in a roof. I had my numbers and knew how to use them, but I couldn't get it across to my workers. I created the roof cutting calculator so all they would need is the length of the sheet and they could cut the rest of the hip or valley in precisely, or get a precise angle to work in other parts of the house, without any questions or worry.
The box gutter and ventilation calculators
I was forever getting calls from designers, builders, and other plumbers to confirm ‘minimum’ box gutter depths, design constraints, or other liaising that I wasn't getting paid for. I decided to create a calculator to hopefully give them the information they need without my time attached to it.
